Breast Augmentation Surgery in Harrisburg, PA
Many women have always dreamed of a shapelier figure, better body proportions, or restoring the look of their pre-pregnancy days. If that is the case, breast augmentation surgery may be the right choice for you. Breast augmentation is a procedure that uses saline or silicone-filled implants to enlarge and shape the breasts. It can be a real self-esteem booster, may bring you greater options with fashions, and can have a substantial impact on body proportions by evening out the ratio of breast size to hip size.
There have recently been many advances in breast augmentation. Breast enhancement patients can now enjoy a variety of implant choices specific to their needs, shorter time in the OR due to better instrumentation, and advances in pain and nausea management. These changes offer patients better long term results, shorter scars or incisions, diminished pain, faster recovery, and a more natural look and feel.
Am I a Good Candidate for Breast Augmentation?
Many women in the Central PA region are candidates for breast augmentation. This procedure can be performed on women from the age of 18 and older. (Silicone Breast Implants are offered to women age 22 and older in compliance with the FDA.) Good candidates also have skin that is more elastic and will drape nicely over an implant. If the skin is less elastic, a breast augmentation with lift is another option. If you are bothered by the feeling that your breasts are too small, you are self-conscious due to loss of volume of the breast, or you are frustrated with finding clothes that fit well and look great, a breast enlargement may be a terrific option.
What Types of Breast Implants Are Offered in Harrisburg, PA?
During a consultation, Dr. de Ramón will do a physical exam, discuss goals, and have a patient “try on” a variety of implants. Some patients prefer to bring a spouse or special friend for some advice on implant selection. Patients can choose saline, silicone, or structured saline implants and round or shaped implants based upon the desired outcome. Dr. de Ramón will review all the options and all the major considerations for the patient to select the implant type and size. While breast size is a very personal decision, advice based upon your body type and proportions is provided. Dr de Ramón prefers for patients to choose their implants after giving them all the information they need to make an informed decision.
When it comes to breast implants in Pennsylvania, Dr. de Ramón offers his patients a variety of options to choose from. Traditionally women had to choose between saline and silicone implants. Silicone may offer a more natural feel and less rippling, but surgery for deflation can be more complicated and the FDA recommends MRI imaging every 2-3 years starting 5-6 years after placement.
Saline Implants
Saline implants use the same outer shell but are filled with a sterile saline solution just like people in the hospital get in their IV. They may be placed through a smaller incision location since they are filled by Dr. de Ramón during the augmentation procedure. In addition, Dr. de Ramón can alter the fill volume intra-operatively allowing for some flexibility in size. In the rare case of rupture, it is easier to detect a potential issue with saline implants and easier to replace.
Saline implants do not require MRI imaging but may feel firmer and in thin patients, wrinkling may be more visible or palpable (able to be felt by touch).
The IDEAL IMPLANT
The latest technology in breast implants is designed to combine the benefits of previous silicone and saline models without the drawbacks. Dr. de Ramón is pleased to be offering the IDEAL IMPLANT Structured Breast Implant, an implant technology invented and designed by a plastic surgeon to give women the best of both worlds—the beautiful look and natural feel they want from a silicone implant, with the safety of a saline implant.
The unique design of the IDEAL IMPLANT is what gives it a natural feel and look without the use of silicone. It has a series of implant shells or baffles which are nested together as well as two separate chambers that hold the saline. Although the implant is made with standard materials, it uses an advanced internal structure to control movement of the saline and supports the implant edges to reduce collapse and wrinkling. The IDEAL IMPLANT also carries a lower rate of both rupture and capsular contracture when compared to silicone implants at 8 years post-op. The published deflation rate for the IDEAL IMPLANT at 8 years is 2.1%
Dr. de Ramón is the only preferred IDEAL IMPLANT surgeon in Central PA. These implants are being offered only to board-certified plastic surgeons! Doctors claiming to be plastic surgeons who are not certified by the American Society of Plastic Surgeons are unable to purchase or offer these implants. In addition, because the design is patented, no other breast implant company can manufacture or sell the IDEAL IMPLANT Structured Breast Implants. If you want a very natural-looking breast augmentation with greater peace of mind and a proven track record of lower complications at 10 years, IDEAL IMPLANT could be the right choice for you. Silicone “Gummy Bear” Implants
The “Gummy Bear” is the latest generation (5th) silicone implant that provides a “tear-drop” or “anatomic” shape compared to other “round” silicone options. Also termed, “form stable” these implants contain more cross-linking in the silicone gel than earlier models which makes them more cohesive and able to maintain their shape. The term “Gummy Bear” was coined to try to describe this silicone characteristic. There are pros and cons to anatomic implants but Dr. de Ramón believes there are more cons than pros. Interestingly, multiple studies now show that people and even board-certified plastic surgeons can’t tell the difference from round implants when looking at pictures of women with both.
Some advantages of silicone over saline include less palpability of the implant edge, a more natural feel and look, less likelihood of feeling or seeing wrinkles in the implant, and a lower rupture or leak rate.
What can I expect during breast augmentation recovery?
Dr. de Ramón offers patients in the Harrisburg, PA area advanced post-op pain management by utilizing long-acting numbing medication at the surgical site to reduce pain and reduce the need for pain medication. In addition, his operative technique produces less bleeding, bruising, and pain than older techniques.

Each patient recovers differently, and Dr. de Ramón will be there to answer questions about activity levels based on individual needs.
