Skin Pen® & Microneedling Services in Harrisburg, PA
Skin Pen® is a medical-grade, state-of-the-art microneedling device designed to improve the appearance of fine lines, wrinkles, and scars on the face and body.
Skin Pen® treatment allows for controlled induction of the skin’s self-repair process by creating thousands of precise micro-injuries in the dermis, automatically triggering new collagen synthesis without causing scar tissue formation. This treatment is effective for treating fine lines, photoaging, acne scars and large pores. The micro-channels created also enhance the skin’s ability to absorb medical-grade anti-aging serums and skin lighteners when applied during or immediately after the treatment.
Our esthetician will apply a medical-grade numbing cream to ensure comfort during the procedure. You will relax with your phone, a book or Netflix while the numbing cream penetrates your skin.
The procedure itself takes 30-45 minutes and can be done regionally for problem areas or on the full face for an overall improvement. Following your procedure, the esthetician will apply a tissue repair cream. Our esthetician will also recommend a personalized regimen of serums, creams, and an SPF for at-home use to enhance your results.
Microneedling with PRP
While microneedling as a standalone procedure is an excellent option for patients, adding platelet-rich plasma (PRP) takes results to a new level! The addition of PRP amplifies the results of the Skin Pen® because PRP uses a patient’s own stem cells to enhance the healing process. The tiny channels in the skin which are caused by the microneedling procedure allow the PRP to be delivered to the deep layers of the skin. The PRP then migrates to the site of these micro-injuries. The platelets release a variety of growth factors that enhance the body’s ability to heal itself (think collagen production). By utilizing Selphyl (a fibrin matrix scaffold), the PRP will remain in the treated area for about 7 days as opposed to PRP by itself which will dissipate after several hours. The longer the PRP remains in the treated area, the longer the body will naturally heal itself.
Adding PRP and Selphyl to the microneedling treatment is safe and easy for the patient. When arriving for an appointment, a small amount of the patient’s blood will be drawn in the office. Over the next 20 minutes, the blood is placed in a centrifuge and spun to separate the blood from the PRP. Using the Selphyl “closed” system allows the blood to be drawn, processed and mixed with the fibrin matrix scaffold in a safe way. During the microneedling treatment, the PRP/fibrin matrix is applied directly to the skin and absorbed during the procedure. There are no additional injections involved. In fact, some patients are more comfortable knowing they are using their own blood and PRP in a procedure than using a product manufactured in a laboratory. There have been no known side effects from the use of Selphyl and virtually no risk of allergic reaction since the fibrin matrix contains no animal or synthetic products.
As with microneedling alone, many patients see some improvement with one treatment. Depending upon the level of improvement desired, most patients will need a series of 3 treatments of microneedling with PRP. Blood draws will need to be performed with each treatment. For treatment of fine lines and wrinkles, most patients will see results that last up to 2 years. In some cases, maintenance treatments may be recommended. The cost of microneedling with PRP for the full face is $750 and for the face and neck, the fee is $1300.
Am I a good candidate for Skin Pen®?
Microneedling has been safely used on both women and men in Central PA, including patients of all skin types. However, patients who have very thin, crepey skin may not be good candidates for Skin Pen®.
What is the recovery like?
There is no downtime with microneedling. The treated area will be pink for up to 48 hours (looks like a sunburn); you will feel sensitive, similar to a sunburn. After 2-3 days you may experience some dryness and flaking. After a few days, you will have a refreshed and radiant complexion! It will take 3-6 months to see the full impact of collagen remodeling and people will require 3-6 treatments.
Dr. de Ramón has a specially trained medical staff to offer personal care throughout the recovery process. Post-op patients are also given his personal cell phone number to contact him in case of problems or questions.
What is the cost of Skin Pen®?
Skin Pen® costs vary by area treated. A regional treatment, for example around the lips, is between $250-275 per treatment. A full-face treatment is between $350-375 per treatment. To get the best results a series of 3 treatments spaced 4 weeks apart is strongly recommended. Some patients will see further benefit from two or three series of 3 treatments spaced 6 months apart. The number of series required is based on the area being treated, the age of the patient and the goals to be achieved. A discount is provided to patients purchasing a series of 3 treatments.
